For some, the challenge of hiking through the nation’s diverse topography is not quite enough. Fortunately, Saudi Arabia takes climbing seriously and has lots to offer the intrepid climber. The Kingdom has big ambitions for its rock climbers and has made moves to make the sport more accessible, even naming Olympic Crag in Al Shafa in honour of the global achievements it hopes future generations will be able to attain.
The Saudi Climbing and Hiking Federation (SCHF), established as the governing body for both climbing and hiking in the region, says its mission is to build talent that can represent the Kingdom in international competitions, while also hosting national and international competitions in Saudi Arabia.
Its website climbing.sa is a great resource for routes, with downloadable guides to 130 routes in six locations across the country. The climbs cover soft rock, granite, sandstone and lime and most of the routes listed are bolted, but not all, with difficulty grades varying from 3 to 8a.
The site also provides contact details for instructors, and the SCHF has a Facebook group to help you find like-minded companions to further your climbing, and keep up to date with developments and competitions.
